Lookout for Storm Chasers!
Homeowners Beware of "Storm Chasers"!
The State of Texas requires a person to have a license to cut hair. However, Texas does not currently have a process for even obtaining a licence to replace your roof. Does this make sense? After all, hair grows back!
For most people, thier homes are the most valuable asset they own. The roofing system chosen to protect that asset is of the utmost importance. After the recent spring storms ravaged North Texas communities, many roofing and home improvement companies have decended upon the area like vultures trying to seize insurance money and short change consumers.
Unfortunately unscrupulous people seize the opportunity to take advantage of of trusting home owners after a storm. Be aware of any solicitation at your door, and evaluate it closely. Unless your roof is leaking, there is no reason to replace your roof. The hail typically accelerates the aging process of your roof system. Storm damage can be traumatic enough! Do not allow yourself to become a victim of dishonest contractors. Take your time to make decisions. Verify who will be working on your roof. Make sure they have a history in your community for putting on reliable roofing.
We reccommend taking time to perform some due diligence before selecting a roofing contractor to replace your roof system. Some things to look for are the following:
1. How long has the roofing contractor been installing roof systems in
your market?
2. Is the roofing contractor a member of any professional organizations
such as the National Roofing Contractors Association? (NRCA), the
Roofing Contractors Association of Texas? (RCAT), or the North Texas
Roofing Contractors Association? (NTRCA)
These organizations have web-sites that that can accessed easily to determine whether a
contractor is a member or not.
3. Does the roofing contractor carry insurance? (It is perfectly
acceptable to ask to see the certification of insurance.)
4. Does the roofing contractor have a permanent location? or do they
office out of their home, hotel room, or even worse, thier pickup or
van.
5. Is the contrator asking for money "up front"? Although a small deposit is acceptable, most
legitimate contractors have resources to install your roof system without getting money large
downpayments.
Many roofing problems will not become evident for several months or possibly a couple of years after the installation. Will you be able to find the company that installed it? The answer is probably not. At that point, you will sustain interior damage, as well as have to pay another contractor to repair the faulty work installed by "storm chasers".
